Reducing waste is good news for pigs At Pennywell – Devon Tourist Attraction
Pennywell Farm Devon Tourist Attraction is working with another Buckfastleigh business on a trial to reduce food waste and provide a food supplement for pigs.
The Pennywell Miniature Pigs have been enjoying Okara which is also known as soy pulp or tofu dreg and is a pulp consisting of insoluble parts of the soybean. These parts remain after pureed soybeans are filtered in the production of soy milk and tofu.
The Okara is being supplied by Dragonfly Foods, just a mile down the road from the farm where Tofu products are made.
“This is a great example of a win, win”, said Pennywell’s Managing Director, Chris Murray. “Dragonfly foods get to use the Okara rather than paying to dispose of it and our pigs have a local supply of a high protein food supplement”.
The trial has been taking place over the last three weeks and so far the pigs seem very happy.
Amanda Robson Managing Director of Dragonfly Foods said: “I am delighted with the collaboration between Pennywell and Dragonfly in respect of our waste Okara.
“The partnership affords Dragonfly a cost effective way of disposing of the unwanted Okara and at the same time provides Pennywells animals with a healthy nutritious food source. This is definitely preferable to simply throwing away a fabulous food.”
