Hawkeye Falconry Display
August 2, 2017
Hawkeye Falconry Display at Pennywell Farm Tourist Attraction in Devon.
There will be a country fayre atmosphere at Pennywell Farm on Wednesday 2nd August when visitors can experience some living heritage with sheep dogs and birds of prey.
The farm is hosting the National Qualifier Sheepdog Trials, now in its 24th year at Pennywell, attracting more dogs and handlers every year.
Organised by the Devon and Exmoor Sheepdog Society, more than 40 dogs and handlers from all over the country will be put through their paces in an open driving trial, demonstrating the skills dogs use every day of their working life.
The first recorded Sheepdog Trials were held in Bala, North Wales In 1873. It was not until 33 years later that the International Sheep Dog Society (ISDS) was formed. Shortly afterwards the first International Trials were held in Gullane, Scotland and except during the war years, have continued to be an annual event.
The dogs use their natural instinct to keep out of the sheep’s sight. By keeping to the edge of the field and gradually gathering in the sheep, the dog doesn’t alarm them.
To make the day even more special, Hawkeye Falconry UK, the most sought after falconry display team in the country will have their fabulous owls and birds of prey on show all day with displays at 1pm and 3pm.
Alistair Leese and his team bring the ancient art of Falconry to the modern age, with breath-taking displays demonstrating the great connection between falconer and bird. This allows for a spectacular experience where the public are encouraged to be part of the display. There are plenty of opportunities for close encounters with the birds during the day and the team are happy to chat, answer questions and provide photo opportunities.
The teams well known speciality is their fast flying falcons, including Peregrine Falcons (up to 243mph) and the Gyr Falcons, the largest falcon in world. These are flown to the best of their abilities and all birds are always in top condition and form, allowing for outstanding and unforgettable presentations.
The farm opens at 10am and both the Sheepdog Trials and Falconry are included in the standard day admission price.
