Dementia Awareness Award for Pennywell

Dementia Awareness Award for Pennywell Pennywell Farm, is the latest Devon business to be awarded Purple Angel accreditation, in recognition of their team becoming dementia aware. The award was presented by Norman McNamara, founder of the global Purple Angel dementia awareness campaign. Pennywell has joined over 1000 businesses worldwide who have taken the time to train their staff to be aware of the needs of their customers with dementia. The farms owner Chris Murray says: "With more than 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK, we know that we are going to be welcoming visitors with the condition. "I want to be confident that both myself and my team give them sufficient understanding, ensuring that they can enjoy everything that Pennywell has to offer." Dementia covers a range of symptoms including memory loss, mood changes and problems with communication and reasoning. These symptoms occur when the brain is damaged by certain diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease and damage caused by a series of small strokes. It is a progressive disease, meaning that symptoms will gradually get worse. Norman founded Purple Angels after being diagnosed with dementia himself at the age of 50. It began in Torbay as the Torbay Dementia Alliance and the Purple Angel symbol is becoming a globally recognised emblem for anyone raising awareness of dementia.
